Abortion

Ban or legal?

Deb Fischer (R)

Ban. The overturning of Roe v. Wade was “a huge victory for the pro-life movement.” Has always been “pro-life.” Supports banning federal funding for abortions and for any Planned Parenthood activities; would redirect the funding to health centers.

Dan Osborn (I)

Legal. Opposes “extreme national measures to ban abortion.” The “decision” should be “between [a woman] and her doctor.” It’s about “protecting individual freedoms,” not a government “dictating morality to its people.”

Climate Change

Should climate change be a top priority?

Deb Fischer (R)

Mostly no. EVs are being “force[d]” on the public. Supports ending tax credits for EVs. Opposed a $369 billion climate initiative. Supported making it easier for farmers to enter carbon credit markets.

Unclear. Supports landowners leasing their land for solar energy: “If you own a piece of land, you should be able to do whatever the hell you want on that land.”

Unclear. Sees school vouchers and charter schools as a local, not federal, issue. “I don’t want the federal government in education.  I’ve always been a strong supporter of public schools.”

No. “Strong and well-funded public schools are the backbone of the American education system.” Vouchers “allow rich people to get tax credits and funding for their kids to go to private schools, while taking funding away from the public schools.” They “punish rural areas that lack private options.”

Voted to block EPA air pollution standards for trucks, reduce the scope of the Clean Water Act, limit the ability of the Fisheries Service to designate critical habitat areas, and not fund restoration projects on federal lands. Introduced a bipartisan bill to expand environmental precision agricultural tech. Fund conservation projects to protect at-risk wildlife.

Loosen. Voted against a bipartisan gun safety bill that strengthened background checks and encouraged “red flag” laws. Sponsored a bill allowing legal carrying of firearms across states. “I will continue to fight to protect the Second Amendment.”

Dan Osborn (I)

Mixed. Supports “reasonable gun safety measures” such as “gun safety education” and “red flag laws.” Is “fundamentally in favor of the Second Amendment. Law-abiding citizens… must always have the right to bear arms.”

Health Care

Increase or decrease government support for health care?

Decrease. Since joining the Senate in 2013, has opposed Obamacare. Sponsored an attempt to repeal it. “It’s not affordable, and… many Nebraskans have been hurt by it.” In 2019 voted to keep a Trump-era rule letting insurance companies sell low-quality Obamacare-exempt health plans.

Unclear. “(Healthcare) decisions shouldn’t be made by insurance companies.” Moderna’s CEO “made $398 million” quadrupling the COVID vaccine price. “I will never support handing huge pharmaceuticals [companies] a blank check.” Opposes taxpayers subsidizing employee health care for big companies that don’t pay a livable wage.

How to handle immigration and the border? Support a path to citizenship for “DACA” participants brought to the US as children?

Voted against a bipartisan border bill in 2024. Prefers “Trump-era reforms that kept our southern border secure” such as the wall and Remain in Mexico. In 2018 supported a pathway to citizenship for DACA participants.

Supports the bipartisan border bill. “Without borders you don’t have a country.” “We have to be able to fund our border security, our border patrol better.” “Then we can work on immigration reform in terms of a clear path to citizenship for the ones who are here.”

Harder. Sponsored a 2017 bill to deregulate the railroad industry. Voted in 2022 to block a national railroad strike after unions rejected a deal with no paid sick leave. In 2022 opposed making companies turn certain independent contractors into employees.

Dan Osborn (I)

Easier. Supports the PRO Act, which would make union organizing easier. Announced more than 20 union endorsements. As a mechanic, led the Omaha branch of a successful strike against the Kellogg Co.
